2. Fax your MP for a ban on the sale of replica weapons
If you don't have quite so much time on your hands you can still get involved by using the service below to lobby the government for a ban of replica weapons.

According to the site's statistics, 68% of faxes were replied to within 14 days proving that this is an effective way of lobbying the government. To get started, enter your postcode in the box below. This will take you to FaxYourMP.com. You will then be asked to enter name and address details and a short message to your MP.

'Copied and pasted' form letters tend to go straight into the parliamentary bin so you will need to use your own words. If you or someone you know has any personal experience of gun crime, an account of this might be a powerful way to make your point. Otherwise you could try including some of the following facts to support your case.

• Police found 72% of the firearms seized by the Metropolitan Police under last year's Operation Trident were converted, modified or upgraded to fire bullets
• Replica guns are especially dangerous, as they do not fire bullets as accurately as normal guns. Unlike normal guns the bullets shatter on impact. Damian Cope died with 189 internal injuries from one bullet from a replica gun
• Some criminals choose to use a replica gun rather than a real one, believing that if caught the sentence would be lighter
• Replica guns can be bought over the counter for as little as £65
